National Summer Transportation Institute
CREATES has hosted the National Summer Transportation Institute for 5 years and is actively involved the Rowan College of Engineering RISE Summer Programs, in addition to hosting tours of the CREATES facilities for secondary school students.
The National Summer Transportation Institute will introduce New Jersey high school students to all aspects of transportation engineering, such as roads, rails, air, safety, and mobility. The program is designed to engage them in a broad range of activities that provide insight into how engineers plan, design, and operate safe transportation systems.
This program is funded by the Federal Highway Administrations, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and Rowan Univeristy. It is FREE of charge to eligible students. On-campus room and board along with lab supplies are included in the scholarship award.
2017–2025
NSTI at Rowan University/CREATES involves an academic program aimed to fulfill the overall goal of acquainting high school students with the transportation industry and potential transportation careers. Specific objectives of the program are:
- Educate students by introducing them to the various transportation modes and the transportation industry from professional engineers
- Expose participating students to STEM topics through a set of pre-designed educational activities
- Motivate students and encourage them, through hands-on activites and experiences, to pursue careers in transportation-related fields
- Introduce participating students to workings of various agencies serving multiple transportation modes on field trips, site and facility tours, and on-site seminars
- Enhance students’ leadership and professional skills through activities designed to introduce them to university life and the main requirements needed to obtain a college degree
A recent survey of students who completed the NSTI program with CREATES reveals the influence the program has had on their future education choices
