WORKSHOP LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of a two-day workshop, the attendees will be able to do the following:

  1. Understand the philosophy of the current empirical design guide.
  2. Define the primary failures in flexible and rigid pavements and establish their primary cause.
  3. Conduct stress-strain analysis under single and multiple layered systems for flexible and rigid pavement systems.
  4. Conduct sensitivity analysis of stiffness and thickness on stress/strain response and understand its implications on design.
  5. Understand the concept of Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL) and how to calculate ESALs for pavement design.
  6. Understand the different criteria for designing a drainage layer for the pavement sections.
  7. Conduct mechanistic-empirical (Asphalt Institute) and empirical (AASHTO) flexible pavement design.
  8. Define the different types of rigid pavement systems and understand their applications.
  9. Conduct mechanistic-empirical (PCA) and empirical (AASHTO) rigid pavement design.
  10. Understand the basis of pavement design using Pavement ME Software of flexible and rigid pavement (demo only)
