Demonstration of Self-Deicing Flexible and Rigid Pavement Systems

Demonstration of Self-Deicing Flexible and Rigid Pavement Systems

  • Project Description:  The goal of this project is to construct two segments of roadway using self-deicing pavement systems (one concrete pavement and another asphalt pavement).
  • Funding Agency: DOD
  • Funding: $1,631,518
  • Abstract:  Ideally, in the case of flexible pavements systems, the conductive asphalt mix developed by CREATEs will be utilized in this demonstration project. Several sensors will be installed within the construction section and its deicing/snow thawing efficiency will be monitored. The research team will also determine the power requirements for the system at different ambient temperatures and the time required to fully heat the pavement, optimal timing to turn on the system, etc. All of these factors will be evaluated under real-world, live traffic conditions.
