Abstract:
Concrete beam end deterioration is caused by the permeation of water and deicing chemicals in the beam. This leads to corrosion of steel and prestressing strands within the beam, causing cracks and spalling, ultimately reducing structural integrity and raising safety concerns. Repairs can improve the safety and longevity of a structure by restoring structural integrity. It can also result in life-cycle cost savings by reducing the need for maintenance and follow-up repairs.
This research investigates common causes of end deterioration in prestressed concrete beams and their structural impacts while reviewing conventional and innovative repair materials and techniques. To identify effective solutions, the project surveys best practices and national guidelines from other State DOTs and industry professionals. Furthermore, field evaluations of deteriorated beam ends in New Jersey are conducted to assess the feasibility of emerging repair alternatives. Ultimately, the study synthesizes national best practices, material evaluations, and local case studies to deliver tailored implementation strategies and selection guidelines for New Jersey's infrastructure needs, ensuring safer, more durable bridge structures.
