Evaluating the Effects of Bicyclists on Corridors' Operating Speed and Crashes

Abstract: 

Cycling has been encouraged for its health benefits and as a sustainable travel mode, and cyclist-involved crashes have risen over the past decade. This study identified the factors that influence vehicle operating speed when bicyclists are present on urban arterials, and the factors that drive bicyclist crashes in New Jersey. The team collected bicyclist volume, roadway characteristics, temporal factors, bicyclist crash records, and vehicle operating speed, then built statistical and machine learning models to measure the effect of each explanatory variable.
