Bridge Resource Program 3
Status: Ongoing
Funding Agency: New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT)
Abstract:
Activity 1a-3: Implementation of Innovative Technologies for Bridge Element
Development of Accelerated Bridge Construction and Repair (ABC+R) Procedure
- The team will coordinate with NJDOT to identify candidate materials and connection details suitable for accelerated bridge construction and repair (ABC+R) applications for NJDOT bridge projects. The primary focus of this task will be laboratory evaluation of advanced materials used in ABC+R, such as, but not limited to, proprietary and non-proprietary ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and polymer concrete (PC) for closure joints, prefabricated element connections, and rapid repair applications.
- Laboratory testing will be conducted to evaluate the mechanical and durability performance of these materials and connection systems. The testing program may include compressive strength, flexural strength, bond strength, shrinkage and cracking behavior, and durability-related tests such as freeze–thaw resistance and permeability. For connection details such as closure joints between prefabricated deck elements, the team may also evaluate structural performance through load testing, cracking behavior, and interface bond performance.
- Based on the laboratory findings and coordination with NJDOT SMEs, the team will provide technical recommendations regarding the potential use of ABC+R materials and connection details. If implementation is considered appropriate and approved by NJDOT, the team may provide technical support during future pilot applications and assist in developing related construction specification language.
