Bridge Resource Program – Task 1.b: Bridge Vertical Clearance Measurement

Status: Completed

Funding Agency: New Jersey Department of Transportation

Abstract: This project aims to measure the vertical clearance of bridges using mobile LiDAR sensors and automated point cloud data processing.

This report presents a mobile LiDAR-based methodology for measuring bridge vertical clearances along selected corridors in New Jersey. Using a survey-grade mobile mapping platform, point cloud data were collected, processed, and analyzed to determine minimum vertical clearances for individual travel lanes. The study documents the data collection workflow, processing methodology, and clearance results for 17 bridges, demonstrating an efficient, repeatable approach that minimizes field exposure while providing accurate clearance measurements for transportation asset management. Several bridges were identified with clearances below the recommended 14 ft 6 in threshold, highlighting locations that may require posting or further evaluation.
