Evaluating Low-Temperature Cracking Resistance of Highly Elastic Asphalt Pavements: Laboratory and Field Insights from Alaska

Presented by Dr. Arunkumar Goli, PhD, Assistant Research Professor at CREATES, Rowan University, this webinar will highlight laboratory and full-scale field research on highly elastic asphalt (HEB) pavements designed for extreme cold climates.
The presentation will cover the development and laboratory characterization of HEB mixtures, construction and instrumentation of full-scale pavement test sections in Fairbanks, Alaska, and their field performance through a complete freeze–thaw winter period. The webinar will also discuss the influence of softening agents on cracking resistance and the practical implementation of HEB mixtures for cold-region pavements.
This full-scale field study was conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC–CRREL).

The presentation will cover how permafrost is increasingly becoming an obstacle in efforts to contruct infrastructure in cold regions due to ground subsudence risk. This seminar discusses the pairing of Multi-Frequency Electromagnetic Induction (MFEMI) methods with inverstion algorithms to characterize soils based on their approximate electrical conductivity profiles to detect permafrost deposits.

Microwave Heating for Concrete Demolition: Fundamentals, Performance, and Practical Applications

This webinar presents an overview of microwave heating (MH) as an emerging technique for the controlled demolition of concrete structures. Unlike traditional demolition methods, microwave energy generates internal volumetric heating that weakens concrete and offers new possiblities for efficient concrete demolition. The session will introduce the fundamental concepts behind microwave-concrete interactions and discuss how factors such as material composition, moisture condition, geometry, and power intensify influence thermal and mechanical behavior. Key experimental insights on temperature development, meterial degradation, and bond performance will be highlighted. This includes compressie strength losses of up to 65% at 400°C and complete specimen destruction above 450°C, along with a simplified modeling framework for estimating internal temperature distribution and supporting process control.
