Utilization of Environmental Project Declarations (EPDs) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to Promote Sustainability in New Jersey Pavements

Abstract:

This FHWA-supported project developed a framework to integrate Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) into NJDOT’s pavement planning. A cradle-to-site LCA methodology was applied to three case studies, including rubblization and overlay projects. Findings emphasized the environmental impact of recycling practices, haul distances, and mix composition. Recommendations focused on expanding EPD coverage and applying standardized methodologies statewide. This work helps NJDOT systematically reduce environmental impacts in pavement design and preservation efforts.
