Development of Test Method to Determine Skid Resistance of Pavement Surfaces

Status: Ongoing

Funding Agency: New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT)

Abstract:

This research developed and validated a standardized test method for skid resistance testing on New Jersey pavements. A pilot project, tire conditioning studies, and calibration of speed adjustment equations informed recommendations for HFST and non-HFST surfaces. The study also explored reducing conditioning distances from 200 miles to 100, 75, and 50 miles, using detailed testing and statistical analysis. Results included comprehensive experimental plans, updated speed adjustment equations, and a revised testing protocol. NJDOT now has a reliable, data-driven standard for efficient and accurate pavement skid testing.
