Establishing Distress-Based Triggers for Selection of Pavement Preservation Treatments in New Jersey

Abstract: 

This project developed distress-based triggers to optimize preservation treatment selection in New Jersey. Researchers analyzed the updated Surface Distress Index (SDI), alternative condition measures, and historical treatment data to build stronger performance models. A spreadsheet-based cost-effectiveness tool was revised, validated, and compared with actual field data. Preservation decision trees were also updated to align with on-the-ground practices and reduce manual reviews. The work provided NJDOT with a robust foundation for lifecycle planning and improved investment strategies.
