Review, Research, and Development of Mix Design Procedures & Specifications for 100% RAP Slurry Seal and Microsurfacing

Abstract:
This study focuses on the design and specification development of 100% recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) microsurfacing mixtures. Laboratory testing demonstrated that full replacement of virgin aggregate with RAP reduced setting time while improving cohesion and adhesion, confirming the feasibility of RAP-based microsurfacing. A draft specification was developed in 2022 and revised in 2023 for the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to guide the design and use of 100% RAP microsurfacing. Field validation through a pilot study is currently being planned to evaluate constructability and performance, providing the basis for large-scale implementation of this sustainable pavement preservation treatment.
