Abstract:
This study will verify and recalibrate the temperature correction factors used to adjust Falling Weight Deflectometer deflections and backcalculated moduli for New Jersey pavements containing specialty asphalt mixtures, specifically High Performance Thin Overlay and Stone Matrix Asphalt. Building on NJDOT’s current procedures developed mainly for conventional dense graded mixtures, the project will collect deflection data across a broad temperature range on selected HPTO and SMA sections and evaluate whether existing correction factors and the FHWA asphalt modulus temperature correction equation accurately represent their structural response. The work will develop New Jersey specific correction relationships by region and pavement thickness, including updated slope parameters for the FHWA equation based on measured temperature modulus behavior. The outcomes will support updates to NJDOT’s FWD Manual or Pavement Design Guide with calibrated factors, equations, and application examples to improve rehabilitation design reliability and cost effectiveness.
